Álvaro Vallejo

A forestry engineer with a Master’s degree in Science, with 38 years’ international experience in nature conservation. He has gained first-hand experience in more than 20 countries across Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
He has contributed to the development of biodiversity programmes at Cercarbono, ICR, NAT5, and Terrasos, providing leadership in regulatory frameworks, methodologies for quantifying positive biodiversity outcomes, and monitoring systems. He has been involved throughout the entire carbon and biodiversity credit certification chain, from the development of standards and methodologies through design, implementation, and auditing to project certification.

A business administrator with over 30 years’ experience leading complex environmental projects and a 45-year career. He served as Executive Director of ASOCARBONO for seven years, which gave him a comprehensive understanding of the Colombian carbon and nature markets.

He led PROCUENCA, the first forestry project in Colombia to be registered with the UN, and has held senior positions such as Secretary for Planning in Manizales and strategic adviser to the “Bosques de Paz” programme at Findeter. His focus is on financial viability, public–private partnerships and aligning projects with public policy priorities.

A lawyer and political scientist, specialising in environmental law, she is responsible for ensuring the legal soundness and regulatory compliance of each initiative. She has worked at Conservation International and at the Secretariat for the Implementation of Environmental Legislation (SALA) under the Colombia–United States Free Trade Agreement and has extensive knowledge of international standards and frameworks.

She specialises in the design of social safeguards, compliance systems and risk analysis, ensuring that projects incorporate robust governance, the participation of local stakeholders and full respect for communities’ rights.
